The wildlife is undeniably a highlight of Hamilton Island. You might see a turtle off Catseye Beach, a lizard on one of the trails or a koala at the wildlife park, but you’ll definitely see a couple of feathered friends during your stay.
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
These guys are cheeky and noisy and are usually found in large numbers. You’ll see plenty of them on the island. Just make sure to keep your balcony door closed, as these fellas aren’t shy and could get into your belongings and food. Cheeky, loud and a love for being perched up high, we present the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. These lively locals are bound to find a place on your balcony as you enjoy a drink or two at sunset. Perfect for a pic, not so perfect if you leave your food unattended. These birds are full of personality and are definitely not shy – so THEY WILL eat any food you leave out and won’t pay the bill. So remember, keep your food and belongings safe – and never feed them (or they’ll be coming back for more!).
Rainbow Lorikeet
The Rainbow Lorikeet is unmistakable with its bright red beak and colourful plumage. They are often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks, or loitering around the Marina hoping to grab a snack. Singing and covered in colour, the striking Rainbow Lorikeet live day to day like it’s Mardi Gras! These beautiful birds are hard to miss with their bright red beaks and extravagant plumage, but if you do happen to miss them in the wild, you can always find a few down near the marina hanging out for a snack (and a boogie).
Pied Currawong
Often mistaken for their relatives the crow or magpie, you’re likely to hear these guys early in the morning and in the evening, as well as before rain. Unfortunately, these guys missed the memo on being colourful. But that doesn’t mean they’re any less beautiful. These predominantly black birds’ only feature small amounts of white under their wings and a bright yellow eye. You’re likely to hear these guys in the mornings, evenings and before rain.
Laughing Kookaburra
A sound as iconic to Australia as Farnsy or Kylie, the Kookaburra’s laugh is capable of dishing out shame or joy in equal measure. Depending, of course, on what you’re getting up to when you hear it! Often heard before they’re seen, the Kookaburra provides a truly Australian soundscape to your relaxing holiday in paradise!
