At WAHI, we love our winged neighbours. In fact, spotting the bevy of birds from your very own balcony is one of the best things to do when relaxing on Hamilton Island! However, there’s one rule we must adhere to always. And that is, simply…don’t feed them. Because this is what happens…

This is what happens when one family mixed a curious 2-year-old, a vegemite sandwich, and 30 cockatoos.

Little James S. and his family were staying with us recently, enjoying a lovely balcony breakfast with a view, when the cheeky 2-year-old let one of their balcony guests sample his favourite vegemite sandwich.

But before you can say ‘don’t feed the cockatoos’, their balcony guests multiplied and swooped down on the table and chairs. Leaving the little man a little scared, and the rest of the breakfast uncovered and in peril.

His quick-thinking Dad quickly ushered his little boy inside, along with the food, and took the above snap – featuring 30 very hungry cockatoos.

“He thought it was hilarious, he wanted to go feed them some more so I had to keep a pretty close eye on him,” said the Father.

And that’s why we love the birds here. But it’s also why we kindly ask ‘please don’t feed them’.
