There is no denying the magic of a glistening, sunny day on the island. From the way the water sparkles to the way the balmy air relaxes you instantly, it’s something that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated. While the region lives up to Queensland’s hallmark slogan “Beautiful One Day, Perfect The Next” part of having a beautiful sub-tropical climate, also means experiencing some rain from time to time.
But fear not, there is still plenty to do on the island on a rainy day. Whether you’re looking for an activity to keep the kids occupied on a wet afternoon or you want a backup plan up your sleeve, we’ve got a wealth of great rainy day activity ideas. We promise there’s something for everyone!

1. Take an art class
You might be a seasoned artist, or perhaps you haven’t picked up a paintbrush since high school art classes—no matter your experience, you can’t go wrong with an art class on the island. These classes allow you to learn (or brush up on) a rewarding and relaxing skill, in a friendly and inspiring environment. There are options for beginners right through to experienced painters, and even classes for your little ones. Check out the monthly roster of classes hosted by talented guest artists to find the perfect option for you.

2. Go bowling
Some things get better with age. Like a good red wine or sharp cheddar cheese, we can confidently say that bowling has definitely levelled up as we’ve gotten older. The island's bowling alley offers family-friendly games suitable for all ages, with small children even catered for with bumpers and ramps.
With seven lanes, arcade games and a fully-licensed bar, you can easily spend an entire afternoon here. Plus, it’s one of the few places where you can try your hand at 9-pin bowling—a game that dates back to the 11th century.
3. Make some furry friends
The island is home to an incredible range of wildlife—both in the wild and at the island’s wildlife park. Centrally located on the resort side of the island (only a short walk from WAHI), it’s an opportunity to get up close to all kinds of Australian fauna such as snakes, lizards, koalas and kangaroos. You can even meet the park’s very own giant crocodile!
Once you’ve finished exploring the park, you can also enjoy a coffee and light lunch or for the VIP experience, you can also book in for an animal encounter with one of the park’s most iconic residents!
4. Get some retail therapy
From everyday items to high-end fashion, nothing is ever far from reach on the island. When a sunshower calls you away from the beach, you can pop down to the Marina Village to browse the incredible selection of local art, fashion, and jewellery in the many boutiques. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a special keepsake to remember the trip by, or a souvenir to bring back to your loved ones at home!
The IGA supermarket is also just a short walk from WAHI and offers all the holiday essentials you’ll need during your time away.
5. Set sail
For something a little more fast-paced, head to Catseye Bay for a joy ride or lesson on your very own catamaran. As the wind rushes through your hair and the water splashes around you, you won’t even notice if it’s sprinkling!
This family-friend activity can be ramped up for those looking for a thrill and seeking the challenge of mastering a mini catamaran. Alternatively, you can slow things down to cruise through the protected ways of Catseye Beach at your own pace.
6. Spa Wumurdaylin
Spa Wurmurdaylin will melt away any of the stress you brought with you from home and have you getting your zen on in no time. Offering a range of holistic treatments including signature massage experiences, facials, scrubs and wraps, you’re guaranteed to leave with a glow.
The team behind Spa Wumurdaylin also pride themselves on their selection of authentic, rejuvenating and soothing products, which are all handpicked to embody wellness, pH balanced skin and natural ingredients. We suggest booking ahead as this is a popular pick for travellers.

7. Have a long lunch
If you’re celebrating a special anniversary or looking to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones, a long, lazy lunch has your name all over it.
One of our favourite places to head for lunch is the Clubhouse Restuarant, located just a 5-minute ferry ride away on Dent Island (home to the Hamilton Island Golf Club). Here, you’ll find breathtaking views of the Coral Sea and lots of local, seasonal produce. Plus, you’ll have the unique experience of dining on the only 18-hole championship golf course in Australia that’s based on its very own island!
Back on the island, fun and family-friendly Sails is another great option that offers à la carte modern Australian cuisine that the whole family will enjoy!
We recommend booking reservations ahead of time, as restaurants tend to book out during busy seasons.
8. Take a dip in the WAHI spa
Rain, hail or shine, WAHI’s heated spa is the perfect place to relax after a big day of sightseeing. Our lagoon pool area is surrounded by lush greenery and overlooks the ocean, which gives it a truly relaxing and tropical ambience. Once you slip into the heated water and turn on the bubbles, you’ll feel the weight of the world drift away in an instant.

9. Hit up the Sports Club
While some people’s idea of the perfect holiday is to switch off and do absolutely nothing, others prefer to use the opportunity to focus on themselves. If you’re looking for ways to get your body moving and nourish yourself with plenty of wholesome holiday vibes, make your way straight to the Sports Club. Here, you can lift weights, build up a sweat on the cardio machines, reserve one of three tennis courts or join in with a group fitness class.
10. Get cosy in your apartment
Sometimes the best memories from a holiday are the in-between moments with your loved ones. When the rain comes out to play and the grey clouds roll in, there is nothing better than an afternoon spent watching a movie or reading a good book, with a bowl full of your favourite snacks. To take things one step further, whip up your own feast in the comfort of your fully-equipped kitchen.
Whether you’re dropping by for a balmy spring weekend or your summer getaway is dotted with tropical showers, there’s always something to do at WAHI.
